In 1991 we heard about an amazing "new" defensive aerosol that was taking America by storm - pepper spray. The active ingredient was oleoresin capsicum, the concentrated extract of hot chilli peppers, used in the food industry (greatly diluted) to spice up pre-packaged foods such as Fritos chips, Mexican specialities, etc. Used in a defensive aerosol it was far superior to CN (alpha-chloroacetaphenone) and other teargasses such as CS (orthochlorobenzylmalononitrile - the standard teargas previously used by the South African Police Services and Police forces worldwide).

Advantages were that it stopped almost any attacker, it acted quicker (almost immediately as compared to CS and CN which can take up to 60 seconds), it worked on suspects that were drunk, drugged or psychotic (CS and CN sometimes don't), it worked on vicious animals (CS and CN don't) and that it was a lot safer, medically speaking, than the chemical teargasses CN and CS.

After in-depth investigation around the world, We developed SWAT Defensive/Tactical Pepperfog®. In 1994, We set up our own dedicated factory for the manufacture of world-class pepper sprays and teargas products.

SWAT Deftac has received accreditation from both the (CSIR) South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research for the use of SWAT pepper spray as being safe to use on humans, as well as the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute for the safe use of SWAT pepper spray on vicious dogs. No fatalities or serious adverse medical effects have been recorded in over ten years of use.
